Urban Hippie makes traditional unpasteurised miso by hand in sunny Nelson. It is the only miso paste produced in Aotearoa. Using soybeans grown in Motueka, natural sea salt, rice, and koji, their miso is fermented for over six months to develop deep flavour and beneficial microbes.

Founded by Takehito Maeda, a Japanese chef who has lived in Nelson since 2007, Urban Hippie brings together over fifteen years of culinary and fermentation knowledge. The result is a high quality product that blends Japanese tradition with New Zealand ingredients.

Their range includes miso paste, misomite spread, miso dressing, and umami salt. All products are gluten free, GMO free, and fermented using traditional methods. Urban Hippie miso is versatile and can be used in soups, marinades, glazes, or dressings.

Everything is made locally with care, offering a genuine handcrafted miso experience
