Homemade Popcorn

Homemade popcorn is the ultimate snack — easy, fast, cheap, healthy, delicious, waste-free, and locally grown. What’s not to love?

You’ll Need:

  • A medium-large pot with a good lid (glass lids = extra fun to watch!)
  • A hot stove element
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil (or coconut oil, rice bran oil – whatever you’ve got)
  • ½ cup popcorn kernels

Method:

  1. Heat the oil
    • Place your pot over medium-high heat.
    • Add 1 Tbsp oil and let it heat for a few seconds.
  2. Add the popcorn
    • Pour in ½ cup of kernels.
    • Cover with the lid and wait — popping should start within 30–45 seconds.
  3. Shake it up
    • Once popping starts, give the pot a good shake to coat the kernels in oil.
    • Continue to shake the pot every so often to keep the heat even and prevent burning.
  4. Watch the heat
    • If popping gets intense, lift the pot ~5cm off the heat to cool it slightly without stopping the action.
    • When popping slows to a few seconds between pops (about 1–2 minutes total), remove from heat.
  5. Serve
    • Tip the popcorn into a large bowl.
    • Season with salt — or get creative with your favourite toppings and let us know what you try!

Hot Tip:

Don’t walk away! Popcorn is quick and unforgiving — give it your full attention for 5 minutes to avoid the dreaded burn.
